Missing Chemicals - Recommended Additions
The following chemicals would complement the current inventory and enable additional educational experiments:
Acids
Acetic Acid (CH₃COOH) - Concentrated (glacial) acetic acid is more versatile than vinegar. Useful for making acetate salts, ester synthesis, and controlled acid reactions.
Sulfuric Acid (H₂SO₄) - Dilute solutions enable dehydration reactions, acid-base chemistry, and electrochemistry. The concentrated form (for adults only) demonstrates dramatic dehydration of sugar.
Indicators
Universal Indicator - Shows the full pH spectrum with color changes. More informative than single indicators.
Additional Salts
Sodium Thiosulfate (Na₂S₂O₃) - For the classic “clock reaction” with acid, photography chemistry, and as a reducing agent with iodine.
Potassium Iodide (KI) - For iodine clock reactions, starch-iodide test, and elephant toothpaste demonstration.
Copper Carbonate (CuCO₃) - Beautiful green color, decomposes on heating to black CuO, reacts with acids to produce CO₂.
Oxidizers and Reducers
Sodium Metabisulfite (Na₂S₂O₅) - Reducing agent for iodine clock reactions and food preservation demonstrations.
Other Useful Chemicals
Activated Charcoal - Demonstrates adsorption, water filtration, and can be used in color-removal experiments.
Glycerin (Glycerol) - For making soap, as a humectant in crystal growing, and various organic chemistry demonstrations.
